A new product for the Financial Conduct Authority
In late 2014, while at mySociety Services, I led a project to help the Financial Conduct Authority create a new online product as part of an awareness campaign to help protect consumers from investment fraud. After facilitating workshops with FCA staff, I conducted two rounds of user research with 16 users to test prototypes we made before coordinating the build of the product.
The FCA Warning List has been used by over 10,000 users to find guidance specific to their situation. Each use of the tool provides intelligence to the FCA on the prevalence of different tactics in current scams.
"Mike grasped the complexity of investment fraud with amazing agility and took our initial concept through a collaborative, user-led approach to deliver an outstanding tool that made our data easy to understand and effective in protecting consumers."—Karen Stalbow, Consumer Communications Lead, FCA
A mobile app review for Nesta and GoodSAM
While at mySociety, I was asked by Nesta to conduct a user experience review of a mobile app created by GoodSAM to alert community responders of nearby cardiac arrests. Nesta were working with GoodSAM and the London Ambulance Service to help fund the further development of the app and integration into LAS systems.
I conducted a process mapping workshop with LAS and GoodSAM to understand the nuances of communication between the user, the app and the emergency dispatch system and ran usability testing sessions of the app with five users.
I identified a number of usability issues with the app that impeded successful interactions (which have since been fixed) and also proposed a visual restructuring to drastically simplify a user's interaction.
"It was excellent working with Mike. He delivered a superb analysis and his mix of UX experience and knowledge of coding really helped."—Mandeep Hothi, Senior Programme Manager, Nesta
Mapping catchment areas of primary schools in Kent
After frustrating hours trying to understand primary catchment areas in Kent, I decided to make a website—Admissions Day—to visualise them. I variously scraped and compiled data from multiple sources in order to present a coherent picture for each school.
The site allows parents to build up a picture of where catchments have been in previous years so they can judge how likely their child would be to get in.
The website has been featured in local newspapers and magazines and promoted by estate agents to their customers.
"Hugely impressive ... could have saved us hours last year"—A Kentish parent
